Kanyoni Wa Ng’ethe
January 10, 2023The quiet hum of a Scrabble tournament is unmistakable. You hear the rhythmic clack of tiles being shuffled in their bags, the soft whispers of players counting points under their breaths as they record them, and the occasional triumphant exclamation when a high-scoring word is laid down (Oyende’s famous “Manyasa!!!" exclamation heard from across the hall). It’s a world where words are currency, strategy is king, and every letter matters.
Kenya is one of the few countries in Africa where this hum has turned into a roar. While Scrabble is still growing across the continent, the Kenyan Scrabble scene stands out for its resilience, community spirit, and raw talent.
Kenya’s Scrabble Stars
Kenyan players have been making waves in the Scrabble world, with names like Grandmaster Allan Oyende, Expert Nderitu Gitonga and Amuke Benard often leading the pack. Oyende’s journey is a testament to the dedication and skill required to succeed at the highest level. Speaking about what sets Kenyan players apart, he said:
“Our deep and profound word knowledge is key. Most top players know 90% or more of the 120,000 permissible Scrabble words. This dedication is what separates us.”
Oyende’s words are not mere exaggeration. The discipline and effort involved in memorizing thousands of words especially the obscure ones like CAZIQUE most often used in competitive play, is a craft in itself. Players dedicate hours every day to studying word lists, practicing with online tools like woogles and lexicraft, and competing on online league games to refine their strategy.
But the road to recognition has not been smooth. Scrabble Kenya, recently recognized as an official association, faced years of challenges before gaining acknowledgment from government officials. Oyende sees this as a sign of progress:
“While financial support hasn’t come yet, we’re hopeful. The recognition alone is a huge step forward for us.”
For aspiring players, he emphasizes patience and persistence:
“There are no shortcuts. Each loss is an opportunity to improve, and that constant grind is what leads to greatness.”He states.
The Role of PANASA
Beyond Kenya, the Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA) has been instrumental in uniting and uplifting the Scrabble community across the continent. The PANASA president Mr Adegbesan Adekoyejo has expressed his commitment to fostering talent and ensuring African players shine on the global stage.
The 2024 ASC held in Kigali, Rwanda, was a highlight for the African Scrabble scene. The twenty _four _year old Oluwatimilehin Doko Nigerian player took the first place becoming the youngest African scrabble championship winner, a testament to the depth of talent across the continent. Events like these are crucial in showcasing Africa’s potential in competitive Scrabble and providing a platform for new players to shine.
PANASA’s initiatives, from organizing cross-border tournaments to hosting word workshops, have significantly contributed to Scrabble’s growth across Africa. Players are now more connected, sharing resources and strategies that push the game to new heights.
Challenges on the Board and Beyond
The journey for players, especially women, is not without its hurdles.
The Kenyan Scrabble scene reflects the broader societal dynamics that often impact women differently from men. Aluha Zawadi, a seasoned player, observes:
"Societal expectations of men and women vary largely such that women may not have enough time to necessarily better their game once they get to a certain point in life. Women are expected to marry, have children, and take care of their family. This changes the trajectory of their lives completely, even though men would still continue with their lives as usual without much changing."
This imbalance has somehow contributed to the small number of women in the game, which in turn affects their competitiveness compared to their male counterparts. Despite these challenges, many women persist and excel, proving their passion for the game.
While relationships can and do naturally form in such close-knit spaces, there’s a difference between building genuine, consensual connections and making others uncomfortable. Creating an environment where players feel respected and valued is crucial to fostering inclusivity and encouraging more women to participate. As the community grows, addressing these challenges is vital to nurturing a fair and thriving Scrabble ecosystem.
A Growing Youth Movement
A notable shift in the African Scrabble scene is the growing participation of young players. Across Kenya, Nigeria, and other countries, schools and universities have begun embracing Scrabble as a tool for academic and personal development. This movement not only helps sharpen students’ vocabulary and analytical skills but also introduces them to a world of strategy and competition that transcends the classroom. In Kenya, Scrabble clubs in schools and universities are thriving, with young players quickly rising through the ranks. The future of Kenyan Scrabble looks promising as these young minds bring fresh ideas, new energy, and a willingness to challenge the norms.
“Scrabble has taught me how to think critically and strategically,” shares a 19 Year old player. ”It’s about making the most out of every letter and every move, and that’s a skill I can apply in life.” she further states.
With initiatives from Scrabble Kenya and PANASA encouraging youth participation, it’s clear that the game is no longer just for older generations. The youth movement is ushering in a new era, one where Scrabble is not just a hobby but a tool for learning, growth, and achievement.
The Future of Scrabble in Kenya and Beyond
As the Kenyan Scrabble scene continues to grow, there are hopes for more international exposure and greater recognition. The country has already hosted several successful tournaments, and local players are eyeing global competitions with increasing ambition. There are still challenges—financial support, sponsorships, and a larger infrastructure to support the sport at a national level.
However, the strength of the community, the dedication of its players, and the leadership of Scrabble Kenya committee gives hope that the Kenyan Scrabble scene can overcome these obstacles. The passion is undeniable, and the talent is abundant. What’s needed is more visibility and support from both local government and international organizations.
Kenya, once a hidden gem in the world of Scrabble, is now a beacon of hope for the African Scrabble community. Its players, with their unwavering dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence, are putting African Scrabble on the map, one tile at a time. With every tournament, every victory, and every lesson learned, Kenya is proving that it is not just a contender in the global Scrabble scene, but a force to be reckoned with. The future is bright, and the roar of Scrabble’s hum will only grow louder.
